Chapter II

THE COMPETITION 1920-21

H. Van Buren Magonigle, "risen to the heights of genius," won the competition for the Memorial in a field of eleven. The impact of the New Yorker and his "altar high erected in the skies," along with discord fomented by disgruntled local architects was long lasting. The brightest memory, however, was of the five great Allied leaders highlighting the 1921 Site Dedication.
