THE IDEA 1918-1920

In a surge of gratitude and patriotism after the First World World, Kansas Citians led by R.A. Long and J.C. Nicols undertook to erect "a memorial befitting ... the youthful crusaders." Well organized mass meetings plus $2 million raised in ten days set the stage for enactment of Kansas City's Liberty Memorial story on the "Athenian Hill" facing their grand Union Station.
